When the owners purchased the property next door to their vacation home on Buzzards Bay, they embarked on the process of building a new modern home to ultimately retire in, while keeping their original home in the family for the next generation. The architect found inspiration in the surrounding trees on the property and brought this natural element into the plan by adding wooden columns, both structural and decorative, to the interior and exterior of the home. The columns are tinted to match the nuanced purple grey of the tree bark and create an atmosphere of bringing the outside in. The home’s materials include quarter sawn white oak flooring and walls, Galaxy schist carved sinks and countertops, and hand blown light fixtures by a local artisan. The owner, a fellow creative, conceived of the blown glass and driftwood dining light fixture, and furnished her living room with vintage mid century pieces.
